i'm lynn berry. we're going to begin with breaking news out of the middle east. according to iran's state tv, the revolutionary guard captured a u.s. drone. the aircraft was flying in iran's airspace and brought down by electronic jamming. we're working to confirm this story. more details as soon as we have them. elsewhere, with only four weeks to go before we reach that fiscal cliff, republicans offer a proposal for a new deal. it had few specifics. the white house rejected it. tracie potts joins us from washington with the details. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. with a white house proposal and republican proposal on the table, you'd think we would have somewhere to begin negotiations. the white house says what republicans have offered isn't even a start. six governors, democrats, and republicans weigh in on the fiscal cliff today. what will they tell president obama about the spending cuts and tax increases now just 28 days away?

>> we must reign in our out of control spending. >> reporter: republicans have an offer, $800 billion in new taxes, half what the president wanted. $600 billion saved in part by making americans wait until they're 67 to get medicare. plus more cuts totalling $2.2 trillion. but no tax hikes for the wealthy. >> that's just not going to happen. >> reporter: the pentagon could take the biggest hit from president obama told defense experts monday, don't worry. >> even as we make very tough fiscal choices, we're going to keep investing in these programs. >> reporter: he went online on youtube and twitter explaining why he thinks the rich should pay more. going over the fiscal cliff could cost america jobs. >> we're only expanding 2% right now. it needs to be considerably higher to bring more people off unemployment. >> reporter: for the jobless, president obama is asking congress for millions more. and more on the president's plan which will pitch to governors today largely spares social

security and medicare. >> tracie potts for us in washington, thank you. now to the crisis in syria. new reports that the white house and its allies are weighing military options to secure syria's chemical and biological weapons. president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton both issued warnings to syria monday after intelligence picked up signs the assad regime might be making preparations of some kind with its large stockpile of chemical weapons. >> i want to make it absolutely clear to assad and those under his command the world is watching. the use of chemical weapons is and would be totally unacceptable. and if you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons, there will be consequences and you will be held accountable. >> meanwhile, "the new york times" reports russia appears to be weakening in its steadfast support for president assad. the senior turkish official says

moscow agreed to a new approach that would seek ways to persuade assad to relinquish power. kate middleton remains in a london hospital today as the world learns she is expecting. there is a sign of how much thins changed since another royal pregnancy, the one that would lead to the birth of her husband, prince william. remember this? >> lady diana spencer became the princess of wales in the ceremony watched by the world at the end of july buckingham palace today say she is expecting. >> nbc's michelles could inski is in london for us. folks team to be a tad excited about this. >> yeah, it's great news. and also difficult news for kate since she's been feeling so poorly. this morning the palace is trying to maintain privacy surrounding this while she's still in the hospital suffering from very severe morning

sickness. the palace did say this is very early in the pregnancy. it's not yet three months. but will not be giving daily updates on her condition. the british press is reporting she's resting, doing okay and has had to be on a drip after being sick for several days. and also allegedly the queen herself did not know about the pregnancy until yesterday when the young couple drove themselves to the hospital. reportedly they were waiting to tell the family at christmas time. certainly this is not the way the palace would have liked ideally to deliver this news. it is very exciting. it's being met with joy and congratulations from around the world. lynn? >> mimichelle, thank you so muc. now a look at your national weather. bill karins spent all morning predicting what the name would be, whether it's a boy or girl. i don't even know he has a forecast today. do you? >> no. you may think this is funny. i was in first grade and i remember how excited i was that

william was princess diane why's first kid. that was my name. i was like, yeah, i'm prince. >> did you tell all the ladies? >> i did. first grade, on the swings. i got first pick of the swings that day. good morning, everyone. the big story in the weather world, of course, the amazingly warm, unusual crazy december temperatures. in some areas as far north as the great lakes and to the 70s. people were wearing shorts yesterday. there is no snow to be found all the way up to the border with canada. i mean it wasn't just isolated. this was across the country from denver all the way to the eastern seaboard. it continues today. yeah, there is more than one ice rink with puddles on it. yesterday's highs, we were 70 in chicago. one away from the all time december high. st. louis was in the mid 70s. we were even 71 in d.c. it was like just such a large area that it encompassed. colder air is starting to filter in behind a front in the midwest. so we're back to normal in the northern plains and the rockies. but everywhere from texas

through southern ohio and all the way to the east coast, you're still going to have one more exceptionally warm day ahead of this front. there are showers on that front. it's really nothing severe. just a few thunderstorms in the ozarks. back out west, another storm dumping heavy rain. this time it's primarily northern portions of the west coast. up in the northwest. in california our rivers have receded so that's good. as far as the um brobrella weat toledo, detroit, bring your umbrella with you for the morning commute. back down towards st. louis. you're going to have wet weather to deal with, too. you can see the showers right now approaching over the top of st. louis. so your forecast today, this is the bottle it up enjoy it while it lasts day, 70s all the way as far north as philadelphia today, even baltimore. new england a little cooler there. mid 50s in boston this time of year. you're loving that. chicago, it's not like they're complaining. in chicago, they went from 70 to 55. that is still by their standards in december, very, very nice.

spent the night with another woman at her apartment before going home and killing his girlfriend and then himself. next to a shocking video, this out of santa fe, new mexico, it's of a blind student being dragged down a hallway by his teacher. a surveillance camera captured the teacher dragging the student to her room. in kentucky, a heinous kidnapping scheme was uncovered during a traffic stop. police arrested three suspects after discovering a store clerk bound and locked in the car trunk. they beat the 22-year-old and stole his car for joy riding. and oregon couple also had some incredible luck on their side when a 100 foot tall tree fell on their car. the couple had just returned from house hunting when a gust of wind sent the tree crashing down. both lunged toward the car floor. they survived that freak accident with minor injuries. unbelievable.

one zoo in oregon has a big task for their newest arrival. a baby asian elephant was born at the zoo last week and now she needs a name. and they're looking for your help. the zoo is holding an online vote to decide between names through sunday evening. the names come all from thai inspiration. they range in meaning from good hearted to glorious or simply just perfection. all right. how about a little sports? we'll start with monday night football. redskins and giants. washington's robert griffin iii ran an option play as he was tackled. the football came loose but it went right into the hands of the right guy, teammate joshua morgan. he scooped up the fumble and took it in for the touchdown. the skins beat big blue 17-16. in the nba, clippers combination of chris paul to blake griffith gave los angeles the lead in the fourth quarter. the clippers hung on to defeat the utah jazz 105-104. in overtime, portland made
